Easton wheels are meticulously tuned
by skilled craftsmen to achieve uniform spoke tension. This
simple procedure vastly strengthens the wheel and greatly reduces
spoke failure. Further,
it allows us to sufficiently tension the spokes so that the wheel
has the compound attributes of light weight, stiffness, and durability.
The spokes are only one aspect of the wheel that sets us apart. Every
aspect of the wheel, from bearings to nipples, has been refined and
improved. Check out some of our less visible hub innovations here. |

CNC-MACHINED HUB BODY
Sure our hubs are pretty, but that's not the half of it. They
employ some important design aspects that deserve mention. Our
hubs are designed to be strong, stiff, and light - and they are.
What's more, our hubs are just as strong whether the lacing is radial
or cross pattern. Functionality is a primary concern in our design.
Look carefully and you'll notice that there are no wear parts in
the hub shell. Anything that can wear is easily and inexpensively
replaceable, and you never have to worry about the primary (and most
expensive) components becoming worn. How long can they last?
We don't know... in the eight years and thousands of miles since
we started making them, we've never seen one wear out!
FREEHUB BODY
The freehub body bolts to the hub and is easily removable and replaceable.
It fits 7, 8, or 9 speed cassettes. With minor modifications, you
can also run Campagnolo 10 speed.
FIXING BOLT
Our custom fixing bolt not only holds the freehub body in place,
but it also serves as a carrier for the sealed cartridge bearing.
This system allows outboard placement of the load carrying bearing,
which allows a smaller, lighter axle.

OUR AXLES
Axle material has been optimized depending upon the application. For
the rear, where strength and rigidity are critical, we use titanium. For
the front, aluminum is ideal. Our mountain bike front hub features
an oversize hollow chromoly axle. As with our components,
the material has been selected to suit the application. And again,
they do not have any moving parts in direct contact, so they aren't
susceptible to rotational wear. |

OUR ENDCAPS
Sure the sculptured end caps look good, but their design has more
to do with function than fashion. Note how they taper nicely into
the main hub body. This isn't just for styling. The
end caps actually form a labyrinth seal that nests into the hub
body. This forms a torturous path for grit which further shields
the bearings from contaminants.

OUR BEARINGS
We use premium grade double sealed cartridge bearings in our hubs.
Why? Cartridge bearings are best for a number of good reasons.
First, the friction reducing properties of a fine sealed cartridge
bearing just can't be beat, so rolling resistance is reduced to
an absolute minimum. Second, cartridge bearings are replaceable—easily
and inexpensively. Third, our bearings are double sealed,
so contamination is virtually eliminated. Finally, we use
proprietary grease formulated specifically for bicycle wheel conditions. It's
optimum viscosity, waterproof, and tremendously impervious to contaminants.
AUTOMATIC BEARING PRELOAD
Inadvertent over tightening causes excessive side-load which destroys
bearings. Easton hubs utilize a carefully calibrated wave
spring to provide automatic pre-load, so the bearings remain in
perfect adjustment at all times. In addition, no maintenance is
necessary. |
